Our Wednesday News Analysis | If Israel cannot stand alone, why do we let it?

Israel is a vassal state, unable to fight its wars or defend itself without the direct support of the US and others (AFP)

The Israeli genocide in Gaza, along with the escalating regional wars it has ignited, has brought two chilling truths into focus:
First, Israel is deliberately and aggressively undermining the security and stability of the entire Middle East,
And second,
Israel is utterly incapable of surviving on its own.

These two assertions, though seemingly distinct, are inextricably linked. For, if those who relentlessly sustain Israel — militarily, politically, and economically — were to withdraw their support finally, the Middle East would not be the powder keg it has been for decades, a situation that has catastrophically worsened since Oct. 7, 2023.

Though no oversimplification is intended, the brutal reality is that all it would take is for Israel to withdraw from Gaza, allowing the devastated, genocide-stricken Strip the faintest chance to heal. More than 56,000 Palestinians, including some 17,000 children, have been brutally slaughtered since the commencement of this war, a horrifying tally that is expected to surge dramatically when comprehensive investigations into the missing are finally conducted.

Only then could the process of returning to some semblance of normality begin, where the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people must be fiercely championed within an international system built, at least theoretically, on unwavering respect for basic human rights and international law.

The abhorrent “might makes right” maxim would have to be utterly expunged from any future political equation. Middle Eastern countries, both Arab and Muslim, must rise to the occasion, stepping up decisively to aid their brethren and to ensure that Israel is powerless to divide their ranks.

For Israel, this demand is simply impossible, a nonstarter — and understandably so from its colonial perspective. Why?...

Editorial Note | A War of Narratives

Please examine the three narratives below:

  1. The typical narrative expressed by Iranians in the Diaspora.
  2. The narrative (on video) expressed by former UK diplomat Alistair Crook.
  3. The Iranian narrative, “We Won.”

In war, truth is its first casualty.

OPINION | THE ISRAEL-IRAN CEASEFIRE HOLDS HIDDEN COSTS FOR IRANIANS HOPING FOR THE END TO AN OPPRESSIVE REGIME

Iran’s repressive system thrives on crisis. While many called for a ceasefire, this pause is frightening for many ordinary Iranians — it grants the regime time to update its coercive apparatus and redirect its full arsenal against dissidents. (Photo by Mario Tama / Getty Images)

While Israel aims to stop Iran’s nuclear progress, its strikes also send a message to Iranians that the regime can't defend its territory. By degrading air-defense batteries, command centers, and missile sites, Israel challenges the regime’s invincibility, exemplified by its “total control of the skies over Tehran."

These blows revealed Iran’s internal fragility, fueling critics who accuse the Islamic Republic of prioritising regional ambitions over citizen welfare.

President Donald Trump initially ignited debate on regime change in Iran, rallying hard-liners (called “foreign-backed traitors”) and reformists (viewing it as external support for change). He later retracted, warning overthrow “would cause chaos”. While this truce halted missile plans, it risks strengthening Iran's internal security state the strikes aimed to challenge.

Mass arrests and summary executions

Iran’s missile exchanges with Israel may have made headlines, but beneath the air strikes lies Tehran’s security apparatus — vital for its survival. After the 24 June ceasefire, Iran’s security forces spread false victory claims, detaining more people, holding show trials, and executing others.
