Israeli authorities are authorizing 3,144 new squatter dwellings on Palestinian land

The Israeli newspaper Arab48 reports that in defiance of President Biden, Israeli authorities are authorizing 3,144 new squatter dwellings on Palestinian land. The move is led by PM Naftali Bennett.
 
Bennett asked his Yamina members of parliament to keep their silence and not engage with other coalition members about the squatters. Bennett knows he has the executive power, and doesn’t want the headache of wrangling with parliament. Bennett is a virulent supporter of the Israeli squatter movement that hopes to prevent a Palestinian state.
 
It is reported that when Bennett came to see Biden in August, Biden pressed for a moratorium on new squatting. Such a moratorium would be necessary to bring the Palestinians back to negotiations. There is no point in holding talks with someone to share a piece of cake if the other person has already cut into it and is devouring it.
 
Israeli leaders apparently feel comfortable blowing off Biden and simply doing whatever they like, because Congress will reward them with billions in US taxpayer dollars annually regardless of their illegal behavior.
 
Israel militarily occupies West Bank and Gaza since 1967. Under the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention and the 2002 Rome Statute, an occupying power is strictly forbidden to send its own citizens into occupied territory. Israel has settled or supported hundreds of thousands of squatters on Palestinian land. A Palestinian state is not possible in moth-eaten West Bank and Gaza. The illegal colonization of Palestine continues.
 
Jordan issued a strong protest against the plans for new squatting, pointing out that it violates numerous UN Security Council resolutions. Iran was put under severe economic sanctions for ignoring UNSC resolutions on low level nuclear enrichment, and the Bush administration cited Iraq’s violation of UNSC resolutions as one basis for its invasion. Israel, however, enjoys impunity for its serial violations of international law, thanks to US support.
