The Vatican—23 February 2002 | I wish Europe to value its rich Christian heritage. This continent is fundamentally rooted in Greco-Roman traditions and Judeo-Christian values that have shaped it throughout the centuries. Europe’s contributions to law, art, literature, and philosophy showcase this Christian influence, particularly from a Christian perspective. Moreover, European people's thoughts, emotions, and expressions bear the marks of this significant impact.

Unfortunately, in the middle of the last millennium, a process of secularization began, particularly in the 18th century, aimed at excluding God and Christianity from human life.

This process frequently results in secularism, encompassing agnosticism and atheism, which entirely dismisses God and the natural moral law in human existence. As a result, Christianity becomes limited to the private sphere of individuals’ lives.

Isn’t it significant that religions, including Christianity, are excluded from the Charter of Europe? I find this anti-historical and offensive to the founding figures of a new Europe, particularly Alcide De Gasperi, to whom your foundation is dedicated.

The "old" continent needs Jesus Christ to prevent losing its soul and the greatness that inspires admiration today. The Christian message upholds essential human values such as personal dignity, freedom of conscience, and the right to dignified work and life.

Undoubtedly, various external influences have shaped the acceptance of these values. At times, Catholics have been reluctant to recognize Christian values that, unfortunately, have strayed from their religious origins because of difficult historical circumstances.

The Church is revitalizing these values throughout Europe. Yet, this initiative may fall prey to ideological relativism and moral nihilism, as it often makes unclear distinctions between right and wrong.

I believe the European Union will recognize its Christian heritage to address the ethical challenges that arise.
